  • An IEP is a document that provides access to accommodations and special education services. A 504 plan is a document that provides access to accommodations, but not special education services.

  • An autism diagnosis can qualify a student for an IEP or 504 plan, depending on the student’s specific circumstances.

  • I had an IEP from when I entered preschool until I graduated high school.

  • The plan will have in it a justification for why it exists. It will list the student’s strengths, weaknesses, and goals.

  • If you’re a full-time teacher, you should have access to a student’s plan. If you’re part-time or a “tech” employed by the district, you may not due to regulations.

  • If you have the time and are allowed, attend your student’s IEP or 504 meeting. This will show the case manager that band/percussion is an important part of the student’s life.
